Legislative Assembly Building
General Information
This project was the first contract undertaken by McAlpine in the Cayman Islands. Of reinforced concrete construction the building externally features a fair-faced, fluted parapet and plinth, with extensive use internally of Welsh slate and local mahogany. The central part of the building contains a tired Assembly Hall with galleries for the public, the Press and important guests. Surrounding this core are offices for the Speaker House and the Legislative Clerks and staff, as well as Common and Conference Rooms. Lighting throughout is provided by a luminous ceiling.
The concrete structure was poured nearly entirely by hand using a bucket brigade of construction operatives, this task was made more complex by the sloping external walls.
