Jennett Building
General Information
One of the oldest reinforced concrete block and slab two-storey buildings in George Town was completely gutted. A structural steel frame was introduced into the existing frame to increase the load-carrying ability of each floor and bring the design up to present code standards. A third floor was then added along with a new pitched roof.
The total square footage has been increased to 15,400 sf. To the east, a tower was added to encompass the main entrance lobby, stairs and elevator. All facades were insulated with styrofoam, new windows and storefronts were added, and all external surfaces coated with a pre-coloured cementitious finish. The building was completely re-wired to present-day codes, toilet facilities added and the entire building centrally air conditioned with 43 parking spaces.
