Glass House Building
General Information
The original wooden structure on the site, having been destroyed by fire in 1972, resulted in the new building beginning in January of 1974, and was completed 18 months later.
The structure has a reinforced concrete core housing service, stairwells and two high-speed elevators which reach into the basement area largely occupied by strong-rooms for the Government Bank. The main frame is of structural steel with composite floor slabs, externally clad with heat-reflecting glass and bronze anodized aluminium curtain walling, the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean. Fully air conditioned throughout, the building provides offices for the territories Governor, the Executive Council Members and many Government Departments in its total floor area of 36,000 square feet.
